F1urps’ Art Commissions: Details
Tier Comparison
Tier 1 is a small drawing that I make in an afternoon with minimal feedback or collaboration. It’s simple, cheap, and delivered quickly. It’s the ideal choice for concept art, character drawings, or small gifts. (See examples*)
Tier 2 is a medium-to-large, fully finished art piece, completed over dozens of working hours in a feedback-driven process, with the goal of providing the best possible result. It’s the ideal choice for display pieces, special occasions, extra-special gifts, or anything intended for commercial use. (See examples*)
Within tier 2, I provide two size options: Small (14" × N, up to 28") or Large (22" × N, up to 30"). Whether you intend to display the piece physically or digitally, a larger canvas will fit more detail and provide a higher-resolution image.
* Note: While viewing the gallery, be advised that some artworks were made for personal purposes only and may not represent the high standard of quality that I would deliver for commissions.
Process
Tier 1
Contact — You contact me expressing your interest in a tier 1 commission. If I’m available, I respond in a timely manner to schedule a consultation. If I’m too busy, I might put you on a waitlist to follow up later when I have availability.
Consultation — We have a brief conversation about the details of your commission over video call, voice call, or text (your choice). I give you an estimated timeline. If we’re ready to proceed, we sign a contract and you pay half of the commission cost up front.
Creation — I work on my own schedule, giving regular progress updates. You have minimal opportunity for input during this process. The status of your commission is publicly viewable in my queue.
Completion — I notify you when I’m done, and I show you the final product. You may request minimal alterations. You pay the second half of the commission cost.
Electronic Delivery — I create a high-quality digital scan of the artwork and send it to you.
Physical Delivery (optional) — For a flat shipping fee, I carefully package the original artwork and ship it to you. Pay extra to include a custom-sized frame. (If the artwork will be displayed physically, I strongly recommend framing it for long-term protection.)
Tier 2
Contact — You contact me expressing your interest in a tier 2 commission.
Creation — We collaborate in a multi-step process to create a product that meets your exact specifications. The status of your commission is publicly viewable in my queue.
Concept — I produce some concept sketches, and we discuss further to solidify the details of the design.
Draft — I create a scaled-down rough draft and present it to you. You may approve it or request changes. We iterate this process until we reach something you’re absolutely satisfied with.
Finalization — Working from the approved draft, I create the final completed version.

Since most of my business is driven by word-of-mouth, I like to reward people with a discount if they come back again or refer their friends. For every commission, you’ll get two coupons (one for you, one for a friend), each of which has a unique secret code redeemable for a one-time 25% discount on a future commission. FAQ
-
On average, a tier 1 commission will take about 1-2 weeks from consultation to delivery, and a tier 2 commission will take about 1-2 months.
I will send you progress updates on a regular basis, and you can always check your status in my queue here, which I keep up-to-date as I work.
The exact timeline depends on how busy my schedule is and how much time your commission needs. I always want to give myself enough time to deliver a 100% finished result without shortcuts or compromises, so I avoid setting hard deadlines. If you need a commission delivered by a specific date, I will do my best, but I can’t make promises.
My contract sets a maximum time limit of six months for me to deliver the commission before you’re legally entitled to a full refund. Six months is much longer than any commission should realistically take; However, this is a simple provision to guarantee you will eventually get a finished commission or your money back.

Currently, I only take payments over PayPal.
If PayPal doesn’t work for you, let me know and I will look into setting up other options.

For tier 1, I’ll choose whatever medium I’m most comfortable with that best fits the style you want. It will probably be colored pencil and/or ink pen on white drawing paper.
For tier 2, I’ll offer you the choice. My preferred mediums are colored pencil, ink, watercolor, and acrylic, but I also have experience with most other 2D art mediums, and I’d love to explore new possibilities if there’s a specific look that you want.
Whatever the medium, my commissions are always made with archival, professional-grade materials, which should last a lifetime without degrading or fading if properly cared for.

The price of a commission has to cover all the expenses involved in creating it. This includes direct costs of making the artwork, such as materials, work time, and overhead time, as well as indirect costs, such as studio maintenance, practice/study time, professional art training, networking in the art community, and business-level accounting, marketing, and upkeep.
In order to sufficiently compensate myself for all these things without charging too much, I calculate my prices based on actual numbers collected over the course of my work. For the average number of hours I spend working on a commission, I pay myself an hourly wage of $20/hr. For everything else, I total up these costs monthly and average them across the number of commissions I can complete in a month. Finally, I include a profit margin of about 10%, which gives me some stability so I can keep doing this business long-term.
I have dedicated countless hours of my life to achieve sufficient skill, experience, knowledge, and versatility to produce professional-quality art, and I am always pushing myself to improve. It’s hard to put a price tag on something so personal and immaterial. However, it is surely worth a lot, so hopefully you will agree that my prices are fair.

Showcasing, sharing, and talking about my art is how I get business. If I’ve worked hard to make something but can’t show it off, that’s a significant loss. However, I acknowledge that some commissions might be deeply personal, and I fully respect the wishes of anyone who wants their commission to remain private. I just ask to be compensated due to the financial and practical impact it has on me.
